Job Summary: 

MRC Jobs Uganda: The Quantitative Field Worker Interviewer will conduct interviews, capture quality data and support the implementation of the Contexts of Violence in Adolescence Cohort Study (CoVAC)

About US:

The MRC/UVRI Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies, clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals over time.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Follow all protocol and procedure for the CoVAC study
  • Collect quality data using the CoVAC survey tools, interview and discussion guides (as instructed) in different schools and communities based in Luwero district and other Ugandan districts, as directed senior members of research team.
  • Conduct child, adolescent and family member tracing activities in communities and schools.
  • Liaise with and maintain positive collaboration with school and community stakeholders to undertake the research.
  • Communicate progress and issues to supervisors in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with the colleagues working in data management, community liaisons’ office, child protection, vehicle drivers, as appropriate.
  • Adhere to all quality and ethical guidelines, including all child protection procedures.
  • Maintain written records of field activities, summarise, and organize data as instructed by senior members of research team.
  • Actively participate in all debriefs and group processes.
  • Perform any other relevant task assigned by the supervisor to support the implementation of the CoVAC study.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant for the Medical Research Council (MRC) UK / UVRI Quantitative Field Worker Interviewer job placement must hold an A’ Level / Uganda Advanced certificate in Education.
  • Diploma or a bachelor’s degree of in science, sociology or related subject
  • Previous experience in discussing issues of violence, sexuality and gender.
  • Experience of working with children desirable
  • An awareness of child protection issues is desirable
  • Ability to handle child protection issues with sensitivity in line with study protocol and legal requirements.
  • Previous experience in conducting surveys
  • Good knowledge and understanding of data quality issues
  • Extensive knowledge of ethical issues working with children and young people
  • Skilled communicator and the ability to negotiate and facilitate good working relationships during fieldwork and with communities.
  • Fluent in (written and spoken) Luganda and English
