Key duties and responsibilities
To oversee the general smooth running of the Laboratory but more specifically:

  • Assist students and Faculty to perform laboratory tests;
  • Preparing specimens and samples;
  • Constructing, maintaining and operating standard laboratory equipment;
  • Ensuring the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced;
  • Recording and sometimes interpreting results to present to senior colleagues;
  • Following and ensuring strict safety procedures and safety checks in the Laboratory
  • Produce periodic reports on performance and safety of the Laboratory.

Qualification and experience

  • A Bachelors of Science in Laboratory Technology or a Diploma in Laboratory Technology with a B.Sc. in Chemistry or Biological field from a recognized institution.
  • Three years‘ experience in an institutional Laboratory is essential.
  • The Job requires a very active well motivated and knowledgeable person with good interpersonal skills and flexible work programme.
  • The right candidate should be able and willing to be trained in modern Laboratory methods and handling of modern equipment including Biotechnology appliances.

Project Assistant-Education (2 posts)

Purpose of the position:

The Project Assistant is responsible for project activity implementation to include school and community mobilization, training, community partnership liaison, data capture and reporting. S/he will contribute to the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) function and will report to the Project Officer.
Person Specifications –

  • Proven experience in community mobilization approaches

About US:

Makerere University Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) is a Company limited by guarantee under Makerere University. MJAP emerged from the Mulago-Mbarara Teaching Hospitals Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) which was established in November 2004 under the then Makerere University Faculty of Medicine with funding from the US President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and technical assistance from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). MJAP is currently implementing a five year Grant under the Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief II (PEPFAR II) supporting the provision of comprehensive HIV/AIDS services including integration of these services in the broader health context in line with the Global Health Initiative (GHI) while strengthening all the Health System Components in the partner institutions to enhance their capacity to provide these services.

Job Summary: The ICT Assistant will mainly manage the day – to- day operations of Mbarara ICT infrastructure through configuration, implementation and maintenance of ICT equipment in line with the ProgramICT policies.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • In charge of installing, maintaining and repairing hardware and software
  • Responsible for testing and evaluating new technology and supporting newapplications and users.
  • Implement network security measures to protect data, software and hardware.
  • Troubleshoot telecom, computer hardware/software and network problems
  • Build staff capacity in usage and consumption of ICT services
  • Provide technical and expertise support to procurement office regarding procurement and disposal of ICT goods and services
  • Implement backup solutions for program data and information
  • The jobholder will provide basic maintenance of the mail server with outlook for users, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) service, and update the servers as per the human resource department
  • Plan, design and implement Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN) and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) solutions and keep them in a functional state
  • Conduct periodic maintenance of ICT equipment.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date and consolidated database of all programcomputers and peripherals
  • Website maintenance which will include regular updating of the programwebsites

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Telecommunication or its equivalent education from recognized University.

Education Field Officer, Integrated Early Childhood Development in refugee & host communities Project – Plan International Uganda

Typical Responsibilities – Key End Results of Position:

Scaling-up of ECCD Interventions and in particular the establishment of the programme team for ECCD Implementation:
• Conducts knowledge and skills gaps among ECCD caregivers/facilitators and other key associated stakeholders and develop capacity building plans to address identified capacity building needs.
• Develops/adapts relevant/appropriate training curriculum for training ECCD caregivers/facilitators, Center Management Committees, Parents Groups and any critical stakeholders associated with ECCD.
• Delivers relevant training for ECCD caregivers/facilitators, Center Management Committees, Parents Groups and any critical stakeholders associated with ECCD to enable them to support appropriate ECCD activities, including sustainability of ECCD interventions.
• Conducts and/or supervises monitors and evaluates relevant training for effectiveness.
• Supports coaching and mentoring of ECCD caregivers/facilitators to enable them to more effectively deliver preschool education activities.
• Provides on-going technical supervision to ECCD caregivers/facilitators and relevant stakeholders to provide quality ECCD emergency response interventions.
• Maintains the database to monitor ECCD children and facilitators and promote capacity building initiatives.
• Provides technical guidance in the establishment of new ECCD centres.
• Recruits, trains and coaches local staff as per guidelines and regulations.
• Supervises local staff and creates a positive and productive working environment.
• Creates and maintains duty schedules.
• Regularly evaluates staff as per guidelines.

ii) Technical support to the Emergency programme in scaling-up of ECCD appropriate parenting and community based programmes:
• Strengthens parents and community engagement in the running and support to ECCD centre and outreach services.
• Mobilises and educates parents and community members to participate in ECCD interventions within the centres and at community level.
• Support the formation, training and operationalisation of strong CFS/ECCD Centre Management Committees for each of the centres.
• Coordinates with all the key partners in the district to enhance mutual support and establish a strong humanitarian networking framework.
• Supports the documentation and sharing of learning, knowledge and experience generated from Plan International Uganda’s Education/ECCD interventions as widely as possible.
• Prepares and submits weekly and monthly reports in writing, including ECCD stock reports , order overviews and asset inventory.

iii) Networking and Coordination Representative of Plan International Uganda in the Education and sometimes Child Protection Working Group meetings in Adjumani district:
• Develops strong and sustainable relationships with local and international NGOs, Government departments and UN bodies involved in Education/ECCD work.
• Coordinates with relevant stakeholders to ensure strong internal programme integration and external programme.
• Keeps abreast of developments within the ECCD field and shares best practices within and outside Plan International Uganda.
• Provides support to Plan International Uganda teams and communities to identify and access resources that will enable them to meet the needs of ECCD children.

iv) Developing of ECCD Fundraising Strategy & tools, writing of proposals for any potential funding opportunities:
• Supports the Emergency Response Team in compiling the concept papers/ proposals of preschool education/ ECCD projects for submission to donors.
