Tugende Jobs in Uganda: The Field Officer will serve the primary customer service point of contact between Tugende and its clients.

About Us:

Tugende is a for-profit social enterprise that helps motorcycle taxi drivers in Uganda own their own motorcycles via a fair, transparent lease-to-own model instead of renting indefinitely. Ownership significantly increases income, job security and road safety. Across Uganda and many other emerging markets, motorcycles help drive the economy, mitigate traffic jams and bad roads, and offer hundreds of thousands of jobs for those with little formal education. Tugende is proving that millions of self-employed entrepreneurs can receive credit to own the equipment they use to provide for their families, even without credit histories, collateral, and in industries considered high risk by traditional lenders. We currently serve over 3,818 customers in Kampala, Mbarara, Jinja, and Mbale. We plan to expand to at least 10 locations in Uganda over the next 1-2 years and then to regional neighbours which may include Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and South Sudan.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:   

Client Vetting and Management:

  • Recruit new applicants: Identify capable clients for Tugende hire-purchase arrangements.
  • Register applicants: Meet with applicants to obtain information on them and answer their questions about the application process.
  • Vet applicantsConduct field visits (at applicant’s stage and home) while paired with another Field Officer.
  • Analyze the strength of completed applications: Analyze applicants’ financial status, creditworthiness and outstanding leases to determine applicant qualification.
  • Approve/Reject applicants: Evaluate applicant’s creditworthiness in line with the existing guidelines
  • Review lease agreements to ensure that they are complete and accurate according to the Tugende Policies.
  • Help deliver Motorcycles to new clients. Ensure that clients understand the key terms and conditions of Tugende, as well as the warrantee and maintenance requirements, before handing over the Motorcycles.

Manage client needs and portfolio performance:

  • Collections: Manage portfolio of up to 180 clients. Regularly follow up on client repayments (on phone and in person), understand any repayment and work challenges, give recommendations or escalate problem cases where necessary. Ensure client data is accurately captured in the lease management system in a timely manner
  • Customer service: Listen and attend to customer comments and inquiries, give recommendations or escalate problem cases where necessary.
  • Office work: Be able to help with office work including signing contracts with clients, transferring titles for Motorcycles and processing passenger service vehicle licenses (PSVs).
  • Office maintenance: Help keep office clean, manage motorcycle traffic outside office, and coordinate clients during applicant classes.
  • Coordinate with local authorities: Engage them as required to facilitate field operations.
  • Be informed: Stay abreast of new innovations and financial services so as to better meet customer needs.
  • Always Growing: Attend career development programs organized by Tugende.
  • Build knowledge of and skills at using Tugende systems
  • Build understanding of lease account portfolio management.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

The United Nations Country Team (UNCT), is comprised of 22 resident and non-resident UN agencies. The UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative (RC/RR) leads the UNCT and is the highest representative of UNDP in Uganda. The RC/RR is also the Designated Official for security for UN Uganda. The UN Resident Coordinator is assisted in her coordination role in the field by United Nations Area Coordinators (UNACs) in the areas where the UN has a strong presence on the ground. The UNAC system is a UNCT-integrated coordination system at the field level that convenes UN agency representatives through regular Area Coordination Team meetings. The UNAC system seeks to accelerate the implementation of Delivering as One at the field level in Acholi and West Nile, Karamoja and South West.

Job Summary:

UN internships in Uganda The Business Operations and Coordination Intern will work in liaison with the Operations Management Team (OMT) comprising of heads of operations, and the United Nations Area Coordinators (UNACs) in the areas where the UN has a strong presence on the ground. The incumbent will facilitate UNDAF implementation operationally, under the UNCT’s guidance, the OMT has developed the Business Operations Strategy (BoS) to a) promote UN system coherence; b) common services harmonization; c) service quality and efficiency; and d) reduction of transactions cost. The intern will support the RCO OMT/BoS focal point in providing common services business coordination support in Kampala including the UN’s presence in Moroto, Gulu and Mbarara.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:   Under the overall guidance of the Resident Coordinator and the direct supervision of the RCO Field Coordination and Business Operations Specialist, the Coordination Intern will support the Resident Coordinator’s Office in a wide range of UN coordination-related tasks, including:

  • Business Coordination Support:

Job Summary: The Research & Development Intern will be working with a team of engineers and supporting the Research & Development department. The Intern will conduct hands-on research to identify consumer needs, and contribute to product development as well as improving tools and machinery.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Routinely analyze and understand the positioning of the product, service or process
  • Work in close collaboration with the team to design and develop specific products, tools, services or processes
  • Set-up tests and validation phases
  • Correct and improve existing products, services or processes ·
  • Support the production start-up
  • Support team gather business intelligence (technology and competitive intelligence) to identify new trends and help conduct strategic planning ·
  • Actively participate in benchmarking and test competitive products to gain relevant information that can be applied to product specifications
  • Manage small R&D projects and report outcomes to R&D manager
  • Where and when necessary, help the team gather any legal documents, including laws, regulations and patents, that are necessary for determining the project’s feasibility.
  • Actively participate in implementing, and complying with, health, safety and environmental regulations on a daily basis
  • Apply research theories, principles, and models when conducting experiments and research activities.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The Research & Development Intern should hold a graduate diploma/degree and experience in the field or in a related area
  • Work well in the field under different conditions as well as in the office
  • Computer literacy i.e. knowledge of MS Excel and Word
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, with a hands-on, roll-up-the-sleeves mentality
  • Ability to perform a variety of complicated tasks.
  • High degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
  • Fluency in English and Luganda
