MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit Profile
The Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies,the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world.
Job Profile
To work with the PI, study coordinator and other project staff on the MENISCUS (Menstrual health interventions, schooling and mental health symptoms among Ugandan students) study. This school-based cluster-randomized trial will evaluate the effectiveness of a menstrual health intervention on a range of health, educational and wellbeing outcomes among students attending 54 Ugandan secondary schools. The trial will be conducted in Wakiso and Kalungu districts. The job holder will report directly to the study coordinator, and will have responsibility for preparing for field activities and managing a team of 3 research assistants, and additional 6 fieldworkers to covering 9 schools for trial activities.
Roles and Responsibilities of MRC/UVRI Jobs Uganda 2021
1. Principal Responsibilities
Work with the study co-ordinator and other project team leads to ensure smooth day today activities of running the trial and ensure collection of quality data;
Co-ordinate and supervise a team of 3 research assistants (RAs) and 6 fieldworkers, including participating in staff training, to ensure that staff are correctly carrying out their duties;
Organising, implementing and analyzing the qualitative research components of the study with the RAs, including in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with study participants and stakeholders;
Lead the trial parental consent and student assent process for 9 schools, with the RAs and fieldworkers;
Organise and implement the administration of baseline and end line survey in 9 schools, with the RAs and fieldworkers;
Liaise with the trial administrator regarding visits to schools from study staff;
Participate in the Trial Co-ordination team meetings;
Assist in preparations for, and participate in, the stakeholder meetings;
Assist in ensuring timely procurement of study materials (pads, cups, analgesics, WASH materials, diaries);
Contribute to the preparation of study questionnaires and other tools;
Liaise with the data manager to ensure correct completion of study forms;
Where appropriate, liaise with the implementing partner (WoMena Uganda) to ensure that the intervention is implemented according to protocol;
Ensure that the study procedures are done according to the study protocol and regulatory requirements;
Managing field based project equipment, materials and data;
Perform any other duties as may be assigned by Study Co-ordinator;
Assist in preparation of dissemination activities; and,
Contribute to study reports and publications.
2. Financial Management
Delegate authority for management of imprest for field based activities (up to 500,000/=).
3. People Management
Manage and coordinate three research assistants and six field workers.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Social sciences or related;
At least three years’ experience in conducting fieldwork including data collection from participants;
Minimum of one year coordinating fieldwork;
Experience in qualitative data analysis of interviews;
Experience delivering and collecting informed consent from study participants;
Knowledge of Microsoft office;
Knowledge in transcription, coding and thematic content analysis;
Excellent management skills;
Good communication skills;
Interest in adolescent health; and,
Interest in health research.
