MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit Profile

The Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies,the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world.

 

 

Job Profile

This position is for a field worker in a study titled “Optimising DTP-containing vaccine infant immunization schedules in UGANDA”. The job holder will participate in the mobilization of the community and potential study participants and raise awareness about the study. He/she will also conduct physical or telephonic follow up for enrolled participants to ensure that they adhere to their study visit schedules.

 

 

Roles and Responsibilities of MRC/UVRI Jobs Uganda 2021

 Participate in training and retraining of study protocols and standard operating procedures;

 Contribute to the effective mobilisation of the target study population to come to study hubs for screening/enrolment and provide feedback to communities on study progress;

 Develops or assists in the development of interview schedules; contacts potential subjects to introduce and explain study objectives and protocol, and arrange interviews, either in person or by telephone;

 Obtain detailed contact information of participants to ease future tracing and follow up those who miss scheduled visits;

 Help in the timely collection and transportation of samples from vaccination hubs to the MUL – Masaka site lab;

 Ensure full understanding of objectives, procedures, risks and benefits of participation by volunteers;

 Assist in generating appointment schedules for volunteers;

 Obtain consent from potential volunteers to visit vaccination hubs and agree on how they would like to be contacted in future;

 Ensure proper documentation and adherence to the study protocol;

 Attend project and site meetings aimed at improving the conduct of the study;

 Carefully collect and respond to any concerns arising from the community pertaining to research conducted by the unit and pass on more complex ones to colleagues who can address them;

 Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the supervisor(s); and,

 Reimburse participants during the study.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a non-health-related course or a diploma in a health-related course;

 Certificate in health education/health promotion, GCP, counselling, research methods is an added advantage;

 Experience in community mobilisation and interviewing preferably in a medical research setting;

 Experience in data collection and or entry;

 Experience riding motorcycles with a class A riding permit;

 Transcription experience is desired;

 Good data analysis skills;

 Good command of both English and Luganda;

 Working knowledge of using GPS and Arch GIS;

 User knowledge in computer applications; and,

 Good communication and interpersonal skills.
