Job Profile:

The Field Technician will work with the PABRA technical team to execute bean experimental trails and research field data collection. The Position reports to the Senior Field Technician and Research Associate (Bean Breeder) and is based at the National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL) – Kawanda.

 

 

Roles and responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Senior Field Technician and Research Associate (Bean Breeder), the Field Technician will provide support on the execution of bean experimental trails and research field data collection based at the National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL) – Kawanda. More specifically he/she will:

  • Participate with the PABRA research team at Kawanda to conduct field bean experimentation trials
  • Execute planting of field trials in consultation with the RA bean breeder
  • Where necessary develop field plans and layout for various seasons
  • Prepare seed for planting in the field according to scheduled work plans,
  • Conduct harvesting of research materials from field following specific protocols for specific trials, follow proper post-harvesting procedures to ensure good seed quality
  • Carry out bean pollination to develop new segregating populations and make selections from segregating populations based on the trait being studied.
  • Maintain breeding populations and progenies based on the objective of the breeding program.
  • Work with the senior field technician to collect and record agronomic data and pest and disease resistance data and enter into spreadsheets using appropriate computer packages and deliver the data for analysis to the Research Assistant- Plant breeding.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

 

 

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Agriculture and at least two (2) years’ experience in Agricultural field activities in a Research Institute
  • Willingness to learn new techniques.
  • Possess basic training in crop production and research techniques in crop improvement
  • Attention to detail, the ability to follow oral and written instructions, and knowledge of both scientific equipment and how to care for plants.
  • Basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, and email software
  • Ability to communicate adequately in English
  • Ability to spend extended periods of time in the field.
  • Ability to use handheld digital equipment for data collection
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions relating to research methods and experimental design.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, prepare reports and make mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to interpret field plans
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity
  • Positive attitude, courteous and strong service orientation.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

Terms of employment:
This is a nationally recruited position based in Kawanda, Uganda. The contract will be for a two-year period, subject to a probation period of three (3) months and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
