Job Summary

The key objective of a journalist is to gather information, write news pieces, and present the news in an honest and balanced manner.

 

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assess leads and pitch captivating story ideas to editors.
  • Ensure that you meet all regular and recurring deadlines.
  • Review and edit work for editorial approval.
  • Use all your findings to prepare clean, concise and factual articles.
  • Adhere to the ethical code of the profession.
  • Keep records off all notes, interviews, and audio files.
  • Create trustworthy relationships with contacts and sources for use in future research.
  • Keep up-to-date on the latest news developments by attending events, studying different papers, opinion pieces, and social media.
  • Collect, verify and decipher data.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communication, or similar field, from a recognised Institution,
  • Must be able to prove that they are a citizen of Uganda
  • Must have a bank account or access to a bank account, a valid ID card, PIN/Social Security number, postal/physical address,
  • Must be between 21 – 28 years old
  • Must have basic understanding of social media & how to promote & tag post for audiences
  • Must be able to share a print, audio, video, photography or form of digital work published on legacy or established digital media platforms,
  • Must be able to speak English and at least one of their own national dialects fluently,
  • Be willing and able to travel to Kampala or Nairobi to collect and return equipment,
  • Must have access to a smartphone with data capabilities,
  • Must commit to attend all the trainings provided under the project, and must commit to producing five (5) high-quality publishable stories by the end of the project period; both outputs are detailed under ‘Project Goals & Outputs’
  • Will commit to feedback and evaluation of work from Project Coordinator and GSMC
  • Post training will produce a minimum of three (3) media outputs that will be submitted for evaluation and feedback prior to production of final five (5) stories.
