Infectious Diseases Institute Profile:

The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is a Ugandan not-for-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen health systems in Africa, with strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development. IDI has six operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research, Laboratory services (including the CAP-certified IDI Core Lab & Translational Lab), Global Health Security and Health System Strengthening.

 

 

Job Summary:

Provides data entry and processing support.  Works in the Data Entry and Processing areas to ensure that the samples received, processed have the accompanying Lab requisitions entered in a timely manner.  Follow Good Laboratory Practices and quality requirements of the CoreLab.

 

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

Technical

  1. Performs processing of laboratory samples according to current protocols, procedures and quality assurance requirements.
  2. Performs freezer sample storage and retrieval according to current protocols.
  3. Performs reagent preparation and equipment maintenance according to training and assignment.
  4. Maintains a high level of precision and accuracy for all work performed.
  5. Supports QIP program.
  6. Responds to technical and logistical problems encountered in the laboratory in a timely and appropriate manner.
  7. Provides input as required for updating laboratory procedures and procedure manuals.
  8. Prepares lab samples for shipment as needed.
  9. Meets or exceeds continuing education requirements for position.

Data Entry

  1. Performs data entry of requisitions, results and storage requirements.
  2. Files laboratory source documents.
  3. Provides electronic transfer of data as needed.

Lab Computer System

  1. Performs daily and weekly back-up of laboratory data on LIS (Oracle).
  2. Works with LDMS as needed.

Safety

  1. Follows all laboratory procedures including safety guidelines, the use of personal protective equipment and awareness of blood-borne pathogens.
  2. Maintains a clean and safe work environment.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • A Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology of two-three years of related Medical Laboratory Technology training
  • Certification/registration eligible as a Medical Lab Technician is required.
  • One year working experience is preferred. Computer literacy with working knowledge of MS Office Software (such as Word, Excel, Power Point…etc) is an added advantage.

  1. Meets or exceeds continuing education requirements for position.
  2. Demonstrates a cooperative attitude in relationships with co-workers and other personnel.
  3. Meets or exceeds quality assurance levels of the laboratory and collaboration.
  4. Maintains confidentiality of patients, patient results and project operations.
  5. Serves as an effective representative to physicians, nurses, counsellors and visitors in a courteous and empathic manner.
  6. Follows laboratory and collaboration polices.
  7. Uses all facilities and supplies with care and in a cost-effective manner.
  8. Assist or carry out other duties as assigned by your direct supervisor or laboratory management
