HerStart: Innovate the Future

HerStart: Innovate the Future is an initiative by YCI aimed at fostering a more equitable and prosperous economy in Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda. Through locally-driven solutions and the engagement of Canadian Fellows, HerStart aims to empower 10,000 young women to develop innovative solutions to community challenges.

Position Summary:

As the Entrepreneurship and Learning Manager, you will report to the Project Lead in Uganda and play a vital role in the HerStart team. Your responsibilities will include providing technical entrepreneurship support to stakeholders, fostering a culture of learning, and coordinating activities related to training, coaching, mentorship, and funding for HerStart participants.

Responsibilities:

  1. Learning System Management (30%):
    • Ensure rigorous data quality control and contribute to data collection efforts.
    • Develop the knowledge management system and integrate program learnings.
    • Inform HerStart communications and reporting initiatives with project results and performance reports.
  2. Small Business Growth and Technical Leadership (20%):
    • Manage coaching and mentorship programs for entrepreneurship culture.
    • Leverage tools such as the Business Model Canvas for enterprise research and planning.
    • Coordinate support for HerStart participants applying for the Catalyst Fund.
  3. Training Quality Assurance (20%):
    • Act as a Master Trainer for HerStart facilitators.
    • Provide technical support in the preparation of training modules and learning materials.
    • Monitor training quality and contribute to ongoing improvement of training materials.
  4. Ecosystem Development (10%):
    • Grow and maintain a network of mentors to support enterprise development.
    • Engage Canadian volunteers in ecosystem development aligned with participant needs.
  5. Volunteer Management (10%):
    • Supervise international and/or national volunteers.
    • Provide coaching and mentorship to ensure their meaningful engagement.

Skills and Experience:

  • Self-starter with 5+ years of enterprise development experience in Uganda.
  • Passionate about investing in women and youth livelihoods.
  • Familiarity with the Lean Startup approach and design thinking.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and support ventures at both start-up and growth phases.
  • Strong network and understanding of the Ugandan entrepreneurial ecosystem.
  • Commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
