Job Summary:

The AI-in-Media Researcher will analyze the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in newsrooms across Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. This research will assess the prevalence, ethics, and impact of AI on media freedom and democratic processes, aligning with the Paris Charter on AI and Journalism. The aim is to empower stakeholders with knowledge to ethically harness AI for a stronger democracy.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Research Design: Develop a comprehensive research framework and methodology for exploring AI adoption in Eastern African newsrooms.
  2. Data Collection: Gather quantitative and qualitative data through surveys, interviews, case studies, and literature reviews.
  3. Mapping AI Adoption: Identify and document the extent and forms of AI technologies used by media organizations in the region.
  4. Best Practices Development: Analyze findings to recommend ethical and sustainable best practices for AI integration.
  5. Reporting: Compile a comprehensive report and presentations to communicate research findings, insights, and recommendations.

Qualifications:

  • Academic Background: Master’s degree or higher in Media Studies, Information Technology, Data Science, or related field.
  • Research Experience: Proven experience in conducting research at the intersection of technology and media.
  • Knowledge of AI: Strong understanding of AI technologies and their applications in the media industry.
  • Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Regional Insight: Familiarity with the Eastern African media landscape and its unique challenges and opportunities.
