About the Organisation:

United Nations Volunteers (UNV): The UNV programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide, integrating qualified and motivated volunteers into development programming to promote global recognition of volunteerism. Administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNV reports to the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board.

UNHCR: Established on 14 December 1950 by the UN General Assembly, UNHCR is mandated to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide, ensuring their rights and well-being are safeguarded.

Job Summary:

The Associate Environment and Energy Officer will work under the supervision of a senior settlement planning colleague, collaborating closely with various technical sectors to support energy and environment interventions. The incumbent will ensure energy programmes align with the UNHCR Global Strategy for Safe Access to Fuel and Energy, engaging with the private sector and development actors to incorporate innovative energy technologies into UNHCR operations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implementation and Coordination: Lead the implementation, coordination, and alignment of the Energy and Environment strategies in UNHCR’s Multi-year Strategy and the Uganda Refugee Response Plan (RRP).
  • Planning and Monitoring: Lead the annual implementation planning, develop a monitoring framework, and manage the implementation plan.
  • PPA Development and Monitoring: Support and monitor the implementation of PPAs at the field level, ensuring coordination among partners.
  • Field Support: Assist field offices in prioritizing programming, propose measures to reduce environmental impact, and define strategies for environmental monitoring.
  • Mainstreaming Environment and Energy: Liaise with technical sectors to minimize environmental impacts, propose rehabilitation projects, and establish strategic partnerships.
  • Additional Support Activities: Assist in achieving operational targets, support sector plans adaptation, and represent UNHCR in various forums.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Nationality: Must be a Korean national.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in natural resource management, energy and environmental sciences, renewable energy, or energy economics/engineering.
  • Experience: Three years in energy provision and environment in humanitarian/development settings, project planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Skills: Knowledge of contemporary research in energy, sustainable technologies, analysis, report writing, community-based approaches, and strong communication skills.
  • Computer Literacy: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and statistical programs.
  • Eligibility: Candidates must not have previously served as a UN Volunteer Specialist funded by the Government of Korea. Serving UN Volunteers must be within three months of contract end date to apply.
