Position Overview

To provide clinical care for patients in outpatient, ward, ICU, OR, and outreach clinics, ensuring efficient, effective, and safe medical care services at CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda.

Responsibilities and Duties

Primary Care Services:

  • Develop proficiency in medical management and pre-operative, post-operative care for surgical patients.
  • Assist surgeons in theatre during operations for common neurosurgical conditions.
  • Assess urgency and severity of presenting problems through history taking, examination, and investigation.
  • Examine, investigate, and treat employees and their qualified dependents at the outpatients’ clinic.
  • Recommend and undertake relevant treatment options, including patient referrals to outside specialists.
  • Participate in clinical activities of the ward, including ward rounds and night/weekend coverage.
  • Conduct prospective employee medical examinations.
  • Travel to remote clinic sites to perform assessments and follow-ups on patients as scheduled.

Patient Health Improvement:

  • Provide ongoing health and development assessment and advice to patients.
  • Offer health education, counseling, and information on how to improve health and prevent disease.
  • Provide counseling to patients and their families.

Accuracy of Information:

  • Ensure all information entered into the system is accurate and in accordance with protocols.
  • Accurately record clinical notes for all patient consultations within 24 hours.
  • Ensure accurate and timely operation reporting.

Communication:

  • Maintain professional liaison with other health professionals.
  • Keep all staff informed about relevant patient or practice information.
  • Attend staff and team meetings as requested.
  • Refer staff problems or issues to the Clinical Services Manager or Senior Medical Officer.
  • Communicate effectively with all facility staff to ensure successful patient care.

Professional Development:

  • Maintain ongoing CME to meet accreditation standards.
  • Participate in practice accreditation or other quality improvement systems.
  • Engage in clinical audits as required.
  • Participate in CME activities organized by the hospital.
  • Prepare health education talks for mothers and staff members.
  • Identify short-term training that enhances role performance.
  • Participate in hospital-scheduled training and sensitization arrangements.
  • Update the professional training tracker card as per training attended.
  • Conduct a minimum of 3 self-initiated professional development sessions annually.

Privacy and Health & Safety:

  • Maintain total confidentiality and privacy of patients.
  • Comply with health and safety policies regarding instrument handling, drug storage, and disposal of sharps.
  • Ensure safe work practices to prevent injury.
  • Follow and comply with H&S policies, using Personal Protective Equipment as required.
  • Participate in activities aimed at preventing harm and promoting well-being in the workplace.
  • Report any work incidents or hazards promptly.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate person(s) promptly.

Occupational Health and Safety:

  • Use the correct PPE during medical and surgical procedures.
  • Ensure proper waste segregation and disposal to prevent injuries.
  • Disinfect and wash all used instruments to prevent infection transmission.

Spiritual Ministry Participation:

  • Participate in the hospital’s Spiritual Ministry programs.
  • Attend chapel and departmental Bible studies with staff.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other tasks, duties, and projects as assigned by the Human Resources team.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Completion of internship.
  • Registration with the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council.
  • Ability to handle confidential documents and materials appropriately.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, establish priorities, and work independently.
  • Computer literacy.

Knowledge, Skills, Competencies & Abilities:

  • Skilled in patient history taking, physical examination, and management of common conditions.
  • Willingness and ability to adopt new knowledge and research procedures.
  • Flexible attitude to duties and work hours.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.

Essential Skills:

  • Maintains open communication with various levels of management.
  • Good teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Good oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • High-level planning and organizational skills, including effective time management.
