Minority Rights Group International Profile:

Minority Rights Group International (MRG) campaigns worldwide with around 150 partners in over 50 countries to ensure that disadvantaged minorities and indigenous peoples, often the poorest of the poor, can make their voices heard.

Minorities that are of concern to MRG are defined as ‘disadvantaged ethnic, national, religious, linguistic or cultural groups which are fewer in number than the rest of the population and which may wish to maintain and develop their identity.

Through our programmes, publications, advocacy, legal cases, consultancies, training and education, and our action in the media, we support minorities and indigenous peoples as they strive to defend their rights – to the lands they live on, to the languages they speak, to the beliefs they practise, to the cultures they enjoy, to equal opportunities in education and employment, and to full participation in public life.

 

 

Job Summary:

The main purpose of the job is to ensure that Minority Rights Group is able to respond to the growing needs of minority communities across Africa by:

  • Raising funding from a wide range of sources (including statutory sources, private and corporate trusts & foundations) to ensure the delivery of its work.
  • Building and nurturing strong partnerships, primarily with donors, but also a wide range of stakeholders (including minority activists, Community Based Organisations, NGOs, like-minded organizations and intergovernmental agencies amongst others) to maximize opportunities for funding to guarantee the successful implementation of MRG’s work.
  • Supporting the design of new projects and initiatives that will attract financial support and thus enable MRG to run projects that have the potential to change the lives of minority communities.

 

 

Role and Responsibilities:

The tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Consistently identify and research new funding opportunities for MRG’s work across the African continent, from a variety of sources including statutory donors, trusts and foundations and corporate support. Sources of funding can be based in Africa but will also need to include donors outside Africa who support work in African countries.
  • Put together and submit quality funding proposals to donors to secure funding for existing and new projects.
  • Negotiate successful contracts with donors and ensure the smooth management of and compliance with all grants awarded, working in close collaboration with Finance and Programme colleagues.
  • Actively seek to build up partnerships and contacts with identified donors to maximize opportunities for the successful support for and implementation of MRG’s initiatives.
  • Nurture existing and prospective donors, sharing with them relevant information on a regular basis, inviting them to events etc.
  • Engage with and support colleagues’ engagement with Africa-based donors including participating in events, organizing visits etc.
  • Advise on the design of new initiatives (short to long-term) to make them attractive to donors’ interests while making sure that all projects respond to the needs of communities on the ground and remain within MRG’s strategic priorities and guiding principles.
  • Lead on ensuring that MRG’s Partnership and Development team, Programme colleagues working on Africa-based projects, and local partners are well informed about funding opportunities for their work.
  • Actively seek to build up partnerships and contacts with stakeholders including like-minded organizations, activists, inter-governmental agencies and donors to maximize opportunities for the successful implementation of the designed initiatives in the long-term.
  • Participates or seek to participate in philanthropists/grants makers evens whenever necessary as to identify new contacts and potential funders.
  • Contribute to maintaining organization wide tools and processes concerning income expectations, payment tracking, workflows, contact details and workflows etc.
  • Advise the Director of Partnerships and Development on any matters related to fundraising in Africa as requested.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications for Minority Rights Group Jobs 2022

We are looking for someone who has:

  • An undergraduate degree or four years’ relevant work experience in a similar level professional role.
  • At least 2 years, experience of work involving fundraising techniques including research, proposal writing logframes, budgets and a successful track record of working with donors.
  • Understanding of project management tools including problem and solution trees, logical frameworks, Participatory Rural Appraisal, theory of change, and budgets.
  • Knowledge of human and minority rights gained either through work or study.
  • At least 2 years’ successful track record in raising funding, including from statutory donors and private or corporate trust and foundations.
  • A good understanding of the fundraising landscape in Africa (donors, priorities etc)
  • At least two years’ experience negotiating grant contracts and overseeing the management of and reporting on signed grants.
  • At least 2 years’ experience of engaging with donors, building partnerships and nurturing existing relationships (incl. ideally at least 2 out of USAID, EU and large foundations and intergovernmental agencies).
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Computer literate and knowledge of MS Word, spreadsheets, databases, the Internet and email packages.
  • Fully numerate and able to develop budgets.
  • Ability to prioritise work, meet deadlines.
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and to assess and absorb information quickly.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to gain the confidence of donors and partners.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required.
