Background: IGAD has been actively engaged in resilience building partnerships with various development partners including the World Bank. Through initiatives like the IGAD Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (IDDRSI), IGAD aims to strengthen resilience against droughts, enhance food security, improve disaster risk management, and promote institutional strengthening in Eastern and Southern Africa. As part of these efforts, IGAD is leading the coordination of regional responses to climate resilience, water resources management, and fragility. The Food Systems Resilience Program is a key component of these initiatives, focusing on enhancing resilience in crop production and management practices across the region.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate strategies and policies related to best practices and transformative actions in crop production and management.
  • Establish partnerships with relevant programs, particularly with CGAIR programs and initiatives.
  • Identify and build consensus around key themes and priorities to accelerate resilience building efforts.
  • Monitor and assess the impacts of climate change on crop productivity and food security.
  • Strengthen IGAD’s technical and program delivery capacities to support national and regional initiatives.
  • Promote awareness of the latest research trends in crop and soil management.
  • Facilitate training and knowledge dissemination on resilience-themed technical subjects.
  • Organize and supervise training sessions on agronomic best practices.
  • Facilitate the dissemination of technologies and strategic interventions for agriculture adaptation to climate change.
  • Document best practices and success stories in agriculture adaptation to climate change.
  • Undertake any other tasks related to project requirements as assigned by the Project Coordinator.

Minimum Requirements: Education Qualifications and Professional Work Experience:

  • MSc or PhD in Agriculture or related field.
  • At least ten (10) years of general experience in the relevant field, with at least five (5) years of specific experience in the last 10 years.
  • 3 years of experience in agronomical best practices and documentation of success stories.
  • 3 years of exposure to development work with international organizations.
  • Knowledge of and working experience in the IGAD region context is highly desirable.
  • Strong experience in facilitating dissemination of technologies and strategic interventions for agriculture adaptation to climate change.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of French is advantageous.
  • Experience in report writing – applicants shall present two sample reports prepared in the past 12 months.
  • Advantageous to have knowledge of World Bank policies and procedures.

Duration and Location of the Assignment:

  • 12 calendar months from the date of contract commencement, with the possibility of renewal for a further 12 months based on performance and project needs.
  • Duty station: Kampala, Uganda.

Reporting Requirements and Timelines for Deliverables:

  • Prepare monthly reports highlighting tasks performed, challenges, and specific recommendations.
  • Submit reports to the Project Coordinator within 7 days after the end of each month.

Reporting Arrangements:

  • Report to the Project Coordinator.
