Opportunity for Research Assistants at Makerere University School of Public Health

Contract Duration: Temporary

Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, World Health Organization, and PATH, funded by the Global Alliance for Vaccine Initiative, is undertaking the “Post-Phase II Yellow Fever Preventive Mass Vaccination Campaign Coverage Survey in Uganda (Post-phase II YFPMVCCS)”. This survey aims to evaluate the performance, reach, and equity of the yellow fever mass vaccination campaign.

MakSPH is seeking to hire Research Assistants to support data collection for approximately one month. The survey will be conducted across six regions: Ankole, South Buganda, North Buganda, Kampala, Teso, and Karamoja.

Position: Research Assistants (108 positions in total, distributed across the six regions as follows: 18 in Ankole, 18 in South Buganda, 18 in North Buganda, 18 in Kampala, 18 in Teso, and 18 in Karamoja)
Reporting to: Field Supervisor

Main Responsibilities:

  • Attend all interviewer training sessions, pre-testing sessions, and debrief meetings.
  • Conduct appropriate community entry procedures.
  • Mobilize and inform sampled households, obtain consent and assent from all eligible members, and conduct mapping and listing of households in selected enumeration areas (EAs).
  • Conduct interviews for all eligible members in sampled households.
  • Ensure high-quality data collection, including conducting callbacks to ensure coverage of all selected households and eligible members.
  • Capture data using provided hardcopies and/or digital devices as per standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure safe and timely upload of all data to the designated server.
  • Provide daily updates to the supervisor on data collection progress and participate in developing daily field reports.
  • Prepare data collection forms, devices, supplies, and equipment.
  • Safeguard all study equipment and materials.
  • Perform any other duties relevant to the position as assigned by the field supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma from a recognized institution.
  • Recent experience (within the last 5 years) in similar field research activities as a data collector, with expertise in community entry/engagement, mapping, listing, and conducting household interviews.
  • Experience in collecting quantitative data in health-related surveys using electronic devices such as smartphones/tablets with data capture software like Open Data Kit (ODK).
  • Valid Certificate in Good Clinical Practice and/or Human Subjects Protection.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in teams.
  • Fluency (writing, reading, and speaking) in English and the local language of the survey region (Runyankore, Luganda, Ateso, or Ngakarimojong).
