Job Summary:

The Legal Advisor will be responsible for monitoring litigation, coordinating court proceedings, and managing the resolution of potential and actual disputes for the company. This role involves providing legal support across all departments, ensuring corporate compliance, and managing legal risks.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Litigation and Case Management:

  • Monitor litigation, attend court hearings, supervise external counsel, and conduct case management.
  • Coordinate court proceedings and manage resolution of potential and actual disputes.

Legal Support and Compliance:

  • Provide legal support and advice to all departments regarding business operations, corporate compliance, and other legal matters.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on company commercial contracts and other relevant documents and agreements.

Legislative Monitoring and Risk Management:

  • Study laws and regulations, monitor changes in relevant legislation, and assist in managing legal risks.
  • Support the compliance function with the implementation and promotion of the company’s compliance work plan, including due diligence tasks, review, and monitoring of anti-corruption and bribery risk mapping and risk mitigation plans.

Representation and Negotiation:

  • Represent the company in meetings, negotiations, discussions, and other dealings with regulators, government authorities, and third parties.
  • Review procurement contracts, provide legal advice, participate in negotiations, and ensure regulatory compliance.

Support to Land Acquisition:

  • Provide support to Land Acquisition activities, including reviewing contractor agreements and reports, attending meetings, and supporting dispute resolution.

Coordination and Reporting:

  • Coordinate the preparation, documentation, review, and submission of periodic progress reports to relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in compliance-related engagements with internal and external stakeholders.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Law; Postgraduate diploma in Legal Practice is mandatory.
  • Experience: Minimum of four years of related working experience, preferably in the Oil & Gas Industry and in international companies.
  • Skills and Knowledge:
    • Demonstrated experience in handling litigation/arbitration and dispute resolution.
    • Extensive knowledge of Ugandan and international laws, regulations, and policies.
    • Knowledge of commercial contracts and petroleum contracts.
