Position Description: GAYO Uganda seeks to hire a Research Officer responsible for shaping the development of GAYO’s external engagement strategy. The successful candidate will work closely with the Country Manager and support the research team’s Disaster Risk portfolio. The Research Officer will conduct research, facilitate interviews and group discussions, analyze data, and produce outputs, including scientific articles, reports, and briefs. The Research Officer will also coordinate with other officers to ensure smooth and successful delivery of functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Co-lead the development of the research paper on Landfill Management, disaster risk, and Public Health.
  • Research sector-related conventions and institutions (Sendai Framework, SDGs, Paris Agreement, Biodiversity Convention, UNCCD, SAICM).
  • Coordinate primary and secondary data collection, including designing survey questionnaires and organizing consultations and discussions.
  • Support the research team in producing research papers, reports, and policy briefs.
  • Maintain an efficient research database in cloud storage, safeguarding confidentiality and data protection.
  • Establish relationships with sector-related research professionals and institutions, including designing MoUs with external entities.
  • Represent GAYO at sector-relevant events following research publications and reports.
  • Identify and apply for research grants/opportunities within GAYO’s areas of work.
  • Support the M&E function and identify best practices for the success of projects and engagement in Uganda.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

Qualifications and Required Competencies:

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Climate Change, Sustainability Science, or related disciplines.
  • Excellent research skills, including conducting literature reviews and quantitative and qualitative data analyses.
  • Good self-management skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Creative problem-solving abilities.

Desirable Competencies:

  • Knowledge of key international institutions and issues related to climate change, environmental sustainability, and waste management.
  • Knowledge of spatial survey software (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) and statistical software (e.g., SPSS, Stata, R).
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Bilingual (e.g., French).

Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, including presenting research findings to different audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently when necessary.
  • Strong organizational skills, including managing multiple projects and priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written English-language skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and work with strict deadlines.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Position starts once a suitable applicant is identified.
  • 2-month probation period.
  • Working hours: 40 per week (full time).
  • Paid leave: 22 days.
  • Working language: English.
  • Monthly salary of UGX 750,000.
