Standard Job Description: Senior Protection Assistant

Organizational Setting and Work Relationships: The Senior Protection Assistant reports to a more senior Protection colleague and provides quality, timely, and effective protection support to persons of concern (PoC). The role involves monitoring protection standards, operational procedures, and practices in protection delivery in line with international standards. The Senior Protection Assistant contributes to designing a comprehensive protection strategy and liaises externally with local authorities and partners on protection issues.

Duties:

  • Apply International and National Law, UN/UNHCR, and IASC policy, standards, and codes of conduct.
  • Provide counselling on protection issues to PoC and ensure the issuance of relevant documentation.
  • Conduct preliminary information gathering and interviews to support eligibility, status determination, and social needs assessment.
  • Contribute to measures to prevent and reduce statelessness.
  • Participate in individual protection case management, including cases of GBV and child protection.
  • Assist in identifying durable solutions for PoC.
  • Draft reports, correspondence, update databases, and compile statistics within the Area of Responsibility.
  • Contribute to initiatives to enhance national and local protection capacities.
  • Enforce integrity in the delivery of protection services by local implementing partners.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: G5 – 2 years relevant experience with High School Diploma; or 1 year relevant work experience with Bachelor or equivalent or higher.
  • Field(s) of Education: Not applicable.
  • Certificates and/or Licenses: International Law, Political Science.

Language Requirements: Knowledge of English and UN working language of the duty station if not English.

Living and Working Conditions:

  • Kyangwali is a Family Duty Station with limited facilities.
  • Weather: Two seasons, relatively cool.
  • Water Provision: Piped system connections for domestic use.
  • Accommodation: All staff accommodated in designated guest/staff houses.
  • Health Facility: Grade III facility accessed by refugees and host community.
  • Shopping: Nearest facilities in Hoima town, 86 Kms away.
  • Banking: No banking or credit card institution in Kyangwali.
  • Postal Services: Nearest services in Hoima town.
  • Mobile Phone Services: Occasional visits by service providers.
  • Internet: Intermittent services dependent on boosters.
  • Transport: Public transport available, with overloading and vehicles in bad condition.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Skills: IT-Computer Literacy, Protection-related guidelines, Refugee Protection Principles and Framework.
  • Education: International Law, Political Science.
  • Competencies: Accountability, Analytical thinking, Client & results orientation, Commitment to continuous learning, Communication, Organizational awareness, Political awareness, Stakeholder management, Teamwork & collaboration.
