About US Embassy:

The United States Embassy in Kampala, Uganda, has maintained diplomatic relations with Uganda for over 30 years. Ambassador Natalie E. Brown currently heads the U.S Mission to Uganda. The Mission encompasses several offices and organizations working under the auspices of the Embassy and at the direction of the Ambassador.

Among the offices operating under the U.S Mission to Uganda are:

  • United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
  • Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

Job Summary:

The Janitor, under the direct supervision of the Custodian Foreman, is responsible for performing various cleaning duties at Mission office facilities and other U.S. Government (USG) owned and leased properties as directed.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Custodial Work and Housekeeping (90%):

  • Clean floors, carpets, and other areas by mopping, vacuuming, and sweeping.
  • Clean restrooms, scrub and wax floors, disinfect, and deodorize lavatories.
  • Polish and clean mirrors, windows, woodwork, and office furniture.
  • Maintain clear pedestrian pathways, steps, walkways, and work areas.
  • Use appropriate cleaning products, chemical solutions, and equipment.
  • Collect and dispose of garbage properly.
  • Rearrange furniture for thorough cleaning operations.

Other Duties Assigned (10%):

  • Address customers’ concerns regarding housekeeping services.
  • Report any cleaning equipment that may need repair or replacement to the supervisor.
  • Organize custodial storage areas.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

Education:

  • Completion of primary school (Required)

Experience:

  • Minimum of six months of custodial or housekeeping experience is required.
  • Adequate knowledge of cleaning and the use of housekeeping materials.
  • Knowledge of safety requirements, occupational hazards, and safety rules and regulations related to cleaning.
  • Ability to physically perform basic manual tasks and use cleaning tools and equipment safely.
  • Good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with customers.

Language:

  • English level I (Rudimentary) Reading/Speaking is required.
  • Luganda level II (Limited knowledge) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required.
