About MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit

The MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit is an internationally recognized center of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioral research, and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention, and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso, and Kampala Districts. It formally joined the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) on February 1, 2018, boosting research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world.

Job Description

Job Purpose The Communications and Engagement Assistant will support the communications and engagement team to increase the visibility of the CCHF study and provide communications support to the development of the CCHF study narrative reports.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of the knowledge exchange strategy of the CCHF study in collaboration with the project management team.
  • Develop and review communication products including a study brochure, policy briefs, videos, and newsletters and ensure they are shared on appropriate platforms.
  • Organize study engagements to strengthen partnerships and knowledge exchange, documenting major events and updating key platforms with reports.
  • Coordinate media engagements on behalf of the CCHF study and build useful relationships with the media.
  • Attend team meetings, develop reports, and contribute to the management of the project’s risk register.
  • Support the development and regular update of the study page on the LSHTM website and social media to increase visibility.
  • Provide communications support to the final report, including layout and design.

Person Specification

  • Degree in Mass Communication or other relevant discipline from a reputable University.
  • Minimum of at least 2 years in a communications and engagement role.
  • Experience in media engagement and event planning.
  • Knowledge of report writing.
  • Knowledge and experience in website management and social media.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of writing for the web and using web content management systems.
  • Good skills in photography and/or videography.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to translate technical language and complex research into communications.
  • Interest in neglected tropical diseases and/or public health.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan work, and respond flexibly to unexpected changes or multiple demands.
