The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) in Uganda Profile:

The Jane Goodall Institute Uganda, with support from One Tree Planted, is implementing a three-year Wildlife Habitat and Corridor restoration project that is promoting tree planting on both community and NFA reserves in the Albertine region and specifically Hoima District and Kagombe Central Forest Reserve in Kagadi District. The long-term objective of the project is to contribute to the maintenance of ecosystem function (products and services) of catchment forests in the Albertine Rift region of Uganda through large afforestation programs and while doing so restore critical corridors for the endangered chimpanzees. Major activities that the project is implementing are: 1) Restore degraded areas in the community forest corridors in Hoima District; 2) Restore degraded areas in Kagombe Central Forest Reserve; 3) Promote agroforestry practices on community land; and 4) Strengthen Forest monitoring and law enforcement

 

 

Job Summary:

The Jane Goodall Institute seeks a dynamic team member to serve as the Roots & Shoots Community Coordinator. The Community Coordinator will report to the Vice President, Africa Programs and work closely with the Africa Programs and Roots & Shoots teams to support the Roots & Shoots Community of Practice (COP) and related projects. This is a full-time position to be based in one of JGI’s Africa offices, which are: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Kigoma, Tanzania; Kampala, Uganda; Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Pointe Noire, Republic of the Congo.The Jane Goodall Institute seeks a dynamic team member to serve as the Roots & Shoots Community Coordinator. Roles and responsibilities:

  • Communicate regularly with all the Roots & Shoots COP members.
  • Coordinate all COP virtual meetings, including liaising with guests and professional development speakers, drafting and sharing the agenda, notetaking and dissemination, and assisting with technical challenges.
  • Support logistics for two in-person workshops to be held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Kampala, Uganda.
  • Administer virtual collaboration tools being used by the COP, could include moderating WhatsApp chats, managing logins for Survey 123, among others.
  • Assist research team with data collection and coordination.
  • Assist with regular administrative tasks including processing disbursement forms, assisting with speaker and partner contracts, and purchasing and shipping supplies internationally, as needed.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or combination of education and 2 years of relevant experience preferred, with an emphasis on coordination and collaboration.
  • Strong communication skills via telephone and email (intra- and inter-departmentally as well as externally)
  • Knowledge of and experience with international youth programs, education, and leadership development preferred.
  • Experience planning an international workshop or event, a plus.
  • Excitement for learning new software and tools.
  • Excellent time management skills, detail-oriented, problem solver
  • Collaborative working style and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Fluent in English, French and/or Swahili highly desired
  • Flexible schedule with the ability to participate in meetings with international teams during their regular business hours
  • Willingness to travel to international locations, up to 20% time with extended stays of 1-2 weeks per trip

Location is flexible across JGI’s Africa-based offices, with remote work a possibility. Physical requirements

  • Job may require long periods of sitting or being stationary. International travel, up to 20%.
