Job Title: Clinical Psychologist

Organization: African Centre for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (ACTV)

Duty Stations: Gulu and Kampala, Uganda

Reports to: Mental Health Coordinator

About Us: The African Centre for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (ACTV) is a Non-Governmental organization in Uganda, operating since 1993. Our mission involves advocating against torture and providing physical and psychological treatment, rehabilitation, social support, and legal services to survivors of torture.

Job Summary: The Clinical Psychologist will provide quality psychological care services to torture survivors at individual and group levels, thereby improving the psychological well-being of the clients.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Deliver mental health services to torture survivors:
    • Provide holistic and quality care to torture survivors.
    • Screen clients for eligibility for mental health services.
    • Conduct psychological assessments to identify client’s needs.
    • Establish baseline interventions and set psychological treatment plans.
    • Plan sessions using the session plan template and conduct psychological counseling.
    • Make client referrals based on appropriate identification of client needs.
  2. Conduct psychological assessments and provide therapy:
    • Offer therapy and treatments for mental health clients.
    • Evaluate each psychological counseling/psychotherapy session.
    • Conduct follow-up assessments and seek clinical supervision.
    • Revise and monitor appropriate treatment programs.
  3. Coordinate with other mental health staff:
    • Participate in clients’ management meetings and mental health coordination meetings.
    • Engage in mental health service fundraising activities and capacity-building activities.
    • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside medical officers, nurses, social workers, and psychiatrists.
  4. Ensure documentation and reporting:
    • Prepare and submit activity reports on mental health activities and periodic reports to the mental health coordinator.
    • Compile minutes of all meetings related to mental health services and prepare reports.
    • Give inputs to the ACTV strategic plan and annual work plan.
    • Maintain an efficient system for keeping patient records and other important documents.

Key Performance Indicators:

  • Provision of appropriate mental health treatment.
  • Number of survivors receiving appropriate mental health treatment.
  • Timely and accurate reports.
  • Number of activity and periodic reports submitted.
  • Knowledge of professional ethics and code of conduct.
  • Knowledge of psychosocial need assessment and effects of torture and psycho trauma.
  • Listening, questioning strategy skills and knowledge of mental health case management systems.
  • Reports submitted to the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) and courts of law.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Master of Science in Clinical Psychology, counselling psychology, or related qualification.
  • Two years of relevant working experience in a similar position.
  • Aged 35 years and below.

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of professional ethics/ethical code of conduct.
  • Psychological interviewing skills and bio psychosocial need assessments/MH diagnostics and case formulation.
  • Communication skills, active listening, and questioning strategy skills.
  • Documentation and reporting skills.
