Wave Mobile Money is building a cashless Africa – starting in Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, Uganda & now in Mali. Without access to financial institutions, people are forced to keep their savings under the mattress. Small business owners rely on lenders who charge extortionate rates. Parents spend hours waiting in line to pay school fees in cash. We’re solving this by building financial services that just work: no account fees, instantly available, and accepted everywhere. In places where electricity, water and roads don’t always work, you can still send money with Wave.
Job Summary:
The Wave Uganda Legal & Risk department supports the development strategy of our business and ensures the company is growing while being compliant with applicable laws and regulations. The Legal & Risk department also assists with mitigating any risk exposure triggered by our business.
The Legal & Risks department regularly interacts with the Business Development team to help build strategic partnerships, with the People team to ensure smooth management of relationships between the company and employees, and with Operations to address any issues derived from our operations.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Reviewing all the contracts or legal documents to ensure alignment with the company’s interests and regulation;
- Drafting contract templates for the company’s new products/services or projects;
- Provision of legal advice for questions related to the regulation applicable to the company’s activity (specific regulation related to E-money, commercial regulation, labor law, civil and penal law, etc.)
- Working with the Head of Legal to put in place case strategies;
- Working hand in hand with internal stakeholders and external lawyers to file court matters and follow-up with external legal counsel;
- Setting up a legal watch for the company’s activity;
- Electronic and physical archiving of all the legal documents;
- Secretarial services.
Minimum Qualifications
- Location is primarily in Kampala, with short-term relocation possible within the country
- Work authorization in Uganda is required
- This is an open-ended contract.

Requirements
- 4+ years experience with mobile money, banking, or other financial sectors
- Bachelor’s degree and a post-graduate diploma in law
- Well organized, detail-oriented with an accurate and clear legal approach.
- Excellent writing skills and excellent listening and communication skills
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken
