Established in 1959, the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) serves as the governing body for rugby union in Uganda. Our mission is to organize local competitions, foster the growth of rugby across the nation, and manage the activities of the Rugby Cranes national representative team. As a member of both World Rugby and Rugby Africa, URU plays a vital role in promoting and developing the sport of rugby in Uganda.
Job Summary:
As the Communications Officer, you will play a pivotal role in nurturing a robust media network, enhancing awareness, and cultivating a strong corporate image for URU. Your responsibilities will involve developing and executing comprehensive communication and media relations programs, including a 360-degree communications and content plan.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop a marketing communications plan encompassing strategy, goals, budget, and tactics.
- Create a media relations strategy to secure placements in print, broadcast, and online media.
- Coordinate all public relations activities to promote URU’s initiatives and events.
- Lead the social media team to engage audiences across various traditional and new media platforms.
- Build and maintain relationships within the Rugby fraternity, leveraging existing and cultivating new contacts.
- Stay updated on the latest social media trends to optimize URU’s digital presence.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive content plan across various social media channels.
- Manage media inquiries, interview requests, and press releases effectively.
- Strengthen relationships with media personnel, influencers, and thought leaders.
- Analyze and communicate PR results and campaign data on a regular basis.
- Identify and evaluate partnership, sponsorship, and advertising opportunities.
- Collaborate with industry stakeholders to raise awareness and promote rugby in Uganda.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Advertising, or related field.
- Additional qualifications (Desirable): Postgraduate/certificate in communication-related field.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a dynamic Public Relations and Communication environment.
- Strong leadership qualities with effective delegation skills.
- Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in planning with exceptional organizational abilities.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Proven track record in designing and executing successful PR campaigns.
- Solid relationships with local and national federations, government, and industry media outlets.
- Expertise in social media platforms including blogs, Facebook, X platform, etc.
- Experience in event planning is an advantage.
