Job Title: Legal Officer (Fresher Jobs)

Reports to: Senior Legal Officer

About US:

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) plays a crucial role in standardization, quality assurance, metrology, and laboratory testing with the goal of fostering fair trade, supporting local industries, and safeguarding consumers.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in reviewing policies and procedures to align with relevant laws.
  • Conducting legal research, interpreting laws/regulations, and preparing legal opinions and briefs.
  • Defending and representing UNBS in legal proceedings like litigation, mediation, and arbitration.
  • Prosecuting criminal offenses under various acts and legislation related to UNBS.
  • Drafting contracts, MOUs, and other legal documents.
  • Training staff on laws and regulations pertinent to UNBS operations.
  • Managing legal document verification, filing, and safe custody.
  • Translating and interpreting contract and legal documents for staff.
  • Maintaining and updating a database of all court matters involving UNBS.
  • Preparing and submitting reports as per the set timelines.
  • Executing other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Must hold an Honours Degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized institution.
  • At least two years of experience in legal practice.
  • Membership in the Uganda Law Society with a valid practicing certificate.
  • Must be an advocate of the High Court.
  • Demonstrates integrity, professionalism, and knowledge of UNBS’s legislative, strategic, and operational framework.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in MS Office and internet applications.
  • Excellent communication skills, integrity, professionalism, and teamwork.
  • Age: Between 25 and 35 years.
