Location: U.S. Mission, Kampala, Uganda

Summary: The U.S. Mission in Uganda is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Political Assistant. The incumbent will provide support in political and economic reporting, with a focus on human rights and civil society, among other areas. They will be responsible for maintaining contacts in the Ugandan government and civil society, serving as the primary Ugandan advisor for the Embassy’s Small Grants office, and drafting reports on human rights and religious freedom.

Duties:

  • Provide political and economic reporting support.
  • Cultivate and maintain contacts in Ugandan government and civil society.
  • Advise the Embassy’s Small Grants selection committees.
  • Draft Congressionally mandated reports on human rights and religious freedom.
  • Receive guidance from the Deputy Political and Economic Counselor.

Qualifications and Evaluations:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in political science, economics, history, journalism, or human rights.
  • Experience: At least five years’ experience in foreign policy, political, social development, academia, or journalism.
  • Language: English Level 4 (fluent), Luganda or Swahili Level 3 (good working knowledge).
  • Skills and Abilities: Ability to interact with officials, civil society groups, and political leaders. Astute judgment and quick decision-making skills. High diplomatic and communications skills.
  • Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of Uganda’s economic and political system, as well as ESTH issues.
