Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) Profile:

The Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) was established in 1987 as a collaboration between researchers at Makerere, Columbia and John Hopkins Universities, the Division of Intramural Research at the National Institutes of Allergy & Infectious diseases and the International Centre for Excellence Research (ICER). This was as a result of the first identification of clinical AIDS in Rakai district Uganda in 1982 by Drs. Sewankambo and Serwadda. The initiation of the Program, then known as Rakai Project led to a series of clinical studies characterizing the disease and its epidemiology; and also brought the partnership with other colleagues including Professor Maria Wawer and Prof Ronald Gray.

 

 

Job Profile:

The mechanic will be responsible for servicing the Rakai Health Sciences Program fleet. The Mechanic will carry out repairs, preventative and predictive maintenance on all program fleet. In addition, the mechanic will be responsible for completing daily maintenance and repair logs, maintaining and securing work tools, examining vehicles/plant to determine extent of damage or malfunctions and performing routine and scheduled maintenance services for all fleet equipment.

 

 

Roles and responsibilities:

  •  Perform routine preventive maintenance, servicing, inspections and repair of organizational vehicles, including motorcycles, generators and related equipment.
  •  Recover and maintain broken down vehicles/generator using proper techniques to minimize the risk of additional damage and accident.
  •  Report on works carried out, including the consumption of spare parts, lubricants, and other items used in the repair of vehicles/generators including time starting and completion of work; Report any workmanship failure that occurred during repairs.
  •  Keep inventory and in good order all repair tools and equipment
  •  Prepare and submit periodic reports as per approved mechanical checklists
  •  Assist in inspecting vehicles or generators for mechanical fitness and performing follow up repairs
  •  Support the transport coordinator in planning and budgeting relevant spare parts and vehicle repair supplies informed by a technical assessment
  •  Perform other related duties as required

 

 

Qualifications

  •  A minimum of a level II certificate in motor vehicle mechanics from a reputable institution
  •  Must have an ordinary level certificate (Uganda Certificate of Education)
  •  A valid driving license for light and commercial vehicles with a clean driving record is required
  •  At least two (2) years experience in commercial and light vehicle repair that includes mechanical, electronics from a reputable organization
  •  Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of how vehicles work and how various parts of the vehicle interact with each other
  •  Ability to deliver accurate results in a timely manner and in an environment with multiple and challenging tasks
  •  Report writing skills are an added advantage
