MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit Profile

The Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies,the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world.

 

 

Job Profile

This position is to provide high quality counselling to the study participants’, parents/ guardians to ensure timely adherence to the study immunization schedules and study visits.

 

 

Roles and Responsibilities of MRC/UVRI Jobs Uganda 2021

 Assist Provide counselling to study participants, attendants and guardians;
 Counsel parents/ guardians before enrolment of their infants into the study;
 Provide counselling to study parents /guardians before and after immunisation;
 Counsel parents/guardians who test HIV positive and link them to care;
 Provide continuous risk reduction counselling for HIV;
 Administer study tools (as may be required) to study participants/guardians/parents;
 Contribute to effective mobilisation of the target study population and provide feedback to communities on study results;
 Ensure full understanding of objectives, procedures, risks and benefits of participation by volunteers;
 Assist in generating appointment schedules for participants;
 Obtain consent from participants/parents and guardians;
 Ensure proper documentation and adherence to the study protocol;
 Obtain anthropometric measurements from the children like weight, height; and,
 Perform any other duty assigned by the PI or the project leader.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 Certificate/diploma in counselling;
 Bachelor’s degree in a related course is an added advantage;
 At least 2 years’ experience working in counselling;
 Experience of working in a research environment;
 Proficiency in computer use (MS word, Excel, Access, Nvivo);
 Good verbal and written communication skills; and,
 Good command of both English and Luganda.
