About Us

The Cluster of Research Excellence in Preparedness and Response to Pandemics and Shocks at MakSPH has been awarded a grant from the CDC Foundation through AFENET. This funding supports the pivotal Mortality Surveillance Project titled “Strengthening Death Notification and Reporting in Kalangala and Buvuma Districts in Uganda.” This project is at the heart of our commitment to enhancing public health responses and policies through meticulous research and data collection.

Job Summary

We are seeking ten (10) dedicated and skilled Research Assistants to facilitate the successful implementation of this vital study. This role is crucial for the gathering of accurate and comprehensive data to support our objectives in improving mortality surveillance and reporting mechanisms.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend comprehensive training and actively participate in all preparatory activities for data collection.
  • Engage in the recruitment of study participants, explaining the study’s importance and securing informed consent.
  • Administer structured interviews and questionnaires in-person, ensuring the accuracy and thoroughness of the data collected.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Securely manage and store all collected data, ensuring its integrity and accuracy before submission.
  • Transcribe and translate audio files as required.
  • Regularly meet with your supervisor to submit collected data and discuss progress.
  • Promptly report any issues with equipment or data integrity to management.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field (e.g., Environmental Health, Public Health, Nursing, Medicine) or in the humanities (e.g., Social Sciences).
  • A Master’s degree will be considered an added advantage.
  • At least one year of experience in qualitative and quantitative data collection.
  • Demonstrated ability in conducting Key Informant Interviews, Focus Group Discussions, and In-depth Interviews.
  • Independent work ethic with the ability to adhere to strict guidelines.
  • Certificates in Good Clinical Practice or Human Subject Research will be advantageous.
  • Proficiency in English and Luganda, both verbal and written.
  • Experience in transcription and translation is required.
  • A keen eye for detail and a commitment to high-quality data collection.

Duration of Engagement

This position is for a two-week engagement, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to a project of significant impact.
