Makerere University College of Health Sciences Profile: 

In 2018, Makerere University College of Health Sciences through the School Public Health (MakSPH) with funding from The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) conducted a study entitled, “Formative Assessment of HIV, Gender-Based Violence and Sexual and Reproductive Health Status among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Uganda”, which was referred to as the “AGYW Study”. This study was conducted in 20 districts of Uganda to generate data necessary to inform the design of interventions aimed at reducing AGYW’s vulnerability to HIV infection, teenage pregnancy and gender-based violence. MakSPH intends to conduct a repeat survey of adolescent girls and young women’s HIV, sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence status in 14 districts of Uganda.

Job Profile:

MakSPH Jobs: As part of this survey, we will conduct a mid-term evaluation of the Global Fund-supported AGYW Project that is being implemented by TASO and its sub-grantees so as to collect data on the: 1) current status of implementation of the AGYW Project, 2) fidelity to the implementation plans, 3) challenges experienced so far and 4) mid-course corrections necessary to achieve the project goal in 2021.
Data collection will take place in 14 selected districts divided into ten data collections teams. To strengthen its current staffing position, MakSPH would like to fill the following vacant positions on the study.

  1. Team 1: Buvuma, Buikwe;
  2. Team 2: Mubende, Mityana;
  3. Team 3: Kayunga, Nakasongola;
  4. Team 4: Mayuge, Jinja;
  5. Team 5: Tororo, Busia;
  6. Team 6: Mbale, Bukwo;
  7. Team 7: Hoima, Buliisa.

Responsibilities

• Properly sample households and enrol study participants as per study protocol
• Perform field data collection and management activities, administer informed consent, conduct and complete interviews in accordance with the study protocol
• Answer questions that the respondents may ask before or during the course of data collection
• Collect data and participate in data management processes including validation to ensure quality data collection
• Conduct key informant interviews, in-depth interviews, focus group discussion, and desk reviews for the mid-term evaluation of Global Fund-supported AGYW Project
• Transcribe qualitative research interviews and participate in qualitative data analysis, where applicable
• Provide the Team Leader with daily updates including households visited, interviews completed, and any other important information about assigned participants
• Any other duties assigned by the data collection team leaders or the Study Coordinator

Job Skills:

• Ability to spend a period in rural areas and away from home
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and observe deadlines
• Must be willing to work in any part of Uganda
• Ability to spend an extended period of time in rural areas and away from home
• Willing to reside in the district for the entire study period
• Ability to work under stringent deadlines and independently with minimal supervision
• Possession of a Certificate in Good Clinical Practice and/or Human Subjects
• Protection and prior data collection experience in the selected region is desired

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Humanities, Statistics, Public Health, or any other related discipline
• Proficiency in both spoken and written English and a common local language spoken in that district Prior experience in conducting face to face interviews
• Prior experience in collecting quantitative and qualitative data particularly among adolescents and young people
• Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to follow study-specific procedures and guidelines reliably
