Job Description: As the Compliance and Claims Legal Officer, you will be responsible for managing compliance, record-keeping, monitoring, and analytical functions related to regulatory compliance, anti-fraud, anti-money laundering (AML), and counter-terrorist financing (CTF). Additionally, you will handle legal matters related to claims and settlements on behalf of the company. Your duties will include:

Compliance Duties:

  • Develop and implement a robust Compliance Management framework to ensure adherence to regulations.
  • Provide high-quality compliance advice to various business and support functions on internal policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Offer advice on anti-money laundering compliance, including client due diligence and KYC standards.
  • Perform real-time surveillance and support to prevent misconduct and promote ethical standards.
  • Conduct compliance monitoring, investigations, and prepare operational policies for management approval.
  • Coordinate submission of regulatory returns and prepare compliance reports for management and the board.

Claims Legal Duties:

  • Review judgments and recommend settlements or appeals, ensuring adequate reserves are maintained.
  • Review legal claims lodged against insured parties and engage in out-of-court negotiations.
  • Receive summons and distribute them to external advocates, coordinating out-of-court committee meetings.
  • Approve discharge vouchers and judgments within approval limits, and review charges by external advocates.
  • Provide periodic reports on performance and ensure adherence to legal procedures and parameters.

Legal & Company Secretarial Duties:

  • Provide technical support to the Company Secretary, organize meetings, and prepare reports.
  • Draft correspondences, reports, agreements, and other legal documents as assigned.
  • Coordinate with external Counsel in handling court cases on behalf of the Company.
  • Represent the Company in legal matters before Courts of Law when required.
  • Carry out legal research, provide legal opinions, and ensure staff compliance with policies and regulations.

Position Specifications:

  • University Degree in Law, admitted to the Ugandan Bar.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in compliance/audit within the financial services industry, preferably insurance or banking.
  • Strong team player with excellent time management, communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to manage tight processes, prioritize effectively, and handle multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake large, long-term projects and implement solutions.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and ethics.
